The fair, of course!
('cause the rides whip you around, the cabbage grows big, and the animals are super stinky! get it?)
We had expected to go one particular day, and made the mistake of telling Amelia. She got up that morning, didn't say a word, and got dressed 'all by MY-self'. She came back and announced that she was ready to go. It was a tough sell to convince her that if she waited just a day or two that Gramma and Grampa would come with us. So, we finally just informed her. Then got the 'privilege' of discussing it for the next two days!
How great is it that when we did actually go, it was a beautiful (insert: hot!) day?! One can generally expect rain, so this was a lovely change.
We were no sooner inside the gate then demands for cotton candy and rides were heard! I 'asked' her to walk around so that we could see what rides she would be able to go on this year. As she wanted to go on all of them, I had to drag her upset little self back to the beginning. Daddy told her that he would go on one ride with her, and she determined that it would be the ferris wheel. I gave her the tickets,
she held on steadfastly,
and could not have been more excited!
They even got to sit at the top for a little bit, and check out the sites!
She loved! Then it was off to the slides. She was allowed to have an adult go with her, but for some reason determined that that would not be the 'big girl' thing to do. So, she grabbed her little potato sack and walked her short self to the top.
While I didn't see a smile on the way down, she was all grins by the end. And quite proud of herself.
She picked all her own rides, so we just watched as she explored.
Grampa waited ever so patiently for his fun time (ie, fair treats!) to begin.
Finally we were off to acquire the obligatory elephant ear. I mean, who goes to the fair and does not partake in this delectable deliciousness?
Daddy even upgraded and tried cream cheese with strawberries.
While very tasty, it was a little much. He began to have sugar convulsions after a couple of bites. Amelia just kept pressing on, though. She's much more stalwart then Daddy.
She was allowed to pick one treat of her own, and had been saying for days that she was going to get cotton candy. Truly, I don't even know how she knows about cotton candy. I asked her to wait for a little after the elephant ears, and she threw a little hissy of which ended in "I want it! And I want it now!" (complete with foot stomp!). I was baffled. She then gained the 'opportunity' to wait much longer for her treat than she'd anticipated, or until I had calmed down. The bag proved to be too much for her anyway, and she took most of it home.
Gramma checked out the local produce. And who could really pass up the opportunity to be a carrot?
Or a pea?
Orrr . . . , lettuce?
Not Gramma! That's for sure. And wasn't she just so excited for it!
Then it was time to check out the stinky stuff. While there, Amelia kind of walked herself into an opportunity. One of the owners came to grab her goat, and Amelia (on her own) asked her if she could pet it. Then we followed them to the milking station, where Amelia just kept asking questions.
Then, it became 'can I try'?
And this lady, posessing extreme patience, said yes! This was definitely was a hi-light of the day. She done good!
Then seeing how weak Grampa was getting, we had to work our way back to the treats. He was much more pleasant afterwards!
And the pixie got a little of everything . . . . . .
In a weird twist, throughout the day we found three extra tickets laying on the ground. So how delighted was Amelia to go on just one more ride before we left! The operator let her stay in, so we waited for about 15 minutes before we finally demanded she come out.
It was a wonderful day. Even saying that, I'm not sure Grampa and Daddy will be going next year.
On the flip-side, Amelia is already looking forward to next year!
