The February to remember . . . . . . .

What a crazy winter!  Right before Thanksgiving 2010, we had beauteous bounties of snow.  Then it rained; a major abnormality for Fairbanks.  Our beautiful snow was gone.  We complained and moved on, as what else so odd could occur.

February, that's what!  This month has gone down as the second snowiest February on record, competing with 1904!  I read somewhere that Fairbanks doesn't really get more than two inches of snow at a time; so these snowfalls are pretty darn good for us!

Sunday night snowed about 2 feet (insert sounds of angels singing!).  It was beautiful.  However, after the sun came up the winds started, and we had wind gust of 50 mph.  You can guess that caused some problems; wind drifts, power outages, trees in a horizontal position.

Once again, the population was advised to stay home.  I'm not sure if that was really a 'choice', as we all got stuck.  J.R.'s mom pulled out of her garage and high-centered her car, so there it stayed for the rest of the day.  JR got out of his parking spot, but was shoveling snow over the hood of his car, so he only made it about thirty feet (have I mentioned we have a loooooonnnnnnnnggggggg driveway?).  When we finally walked down to the mailbox, we found a three foot high snow berm, further hindering our exitus.  Even if we'd had a major catastrophe (house burning, hair on fire), we could not have gotten off our property until at least seven that night.

Then, to add insult to injury, it snowed again four days later.  Half a foot.  It got windy again, but this time it was worse (yes, more records were broken)!

THEN, as if that wasn't enough, it has also been the coldest month, spending several days below -40.  It came mainly between those two snow storms.

We had both placed bets as to whether J.R. could get out; this was at seven in the morn.
This was really as far as he made it (the snow sculpture to the left is my car).
Hello?  Where are my wheels?  The snow was even was the front porch.

The result of snow storm #2.  At least you can see my wheels this time!

I've really been wondering if some greater power is trying to wipe Fairbanks off the map?  It has been a wacky winter.
